Minds Alive

Although Gilbert Highet looks rather like a stuffed shirt in his photographs, according to Robert J. Ball he “consistently gave his audience a commanding performance, whether he spoke or sang or stood or walked, with a presence comparable to that of Laurence Olivier“.

All I knew about him before today came from this quote on a 2011 page-a-day calendar:

“These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves.”

I couldn’t bear to tear that page away so basically it has been there, on my desk at work, for 6 years.

Today became the day to let it go, but I couldn’t do it without leaving a memorial here.

Thanks for reading.
