I just finished reading Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. I rather wish I hadn’t.
This is a darkly depressing book that should not be read by anyone who has darkly depressive tendencies. It shouldn’t even have been written by anyone with those tendencies. Have a care, Bret! And do take care, me old china!
Three stars (out of five) not because it is badly written (it’s quite engaging actually), but because I don’t think it should have been written.
It’s not that dark things don’t happen – they do. It’s just that thinking, speaking, writing about darkness invokes it rather than dispels it.
