Reader Profiles – Jacki

I’ve known Jacki (aka Jacquera Black) for ages. We were on the first year of the Creative Writing MA at the Open University together. She’s one of the very few people on the course that I’ve met in person and the only one who’s kept in touch from that course. So that makes her kind of special.

Jacki has a much wider social media presence than I do. She’s online in all of these places:

  • YouTube (entertaining reviews of books that Jacki is reading)
  • WordPress (some really nice short stories live here)
  • Facebook (only if you’re a friend will you be able to pass)
  • NaNoWriMo (you have to have an account to view this)
  • FanFiction (pretty much what it says on the tin)
  • Goodreads (see below).
Here’s a message from Jacki:
Not really much up to date stuff, been really slack, or tired, haven’t posted any YouTube videos for over a year, my blog, ha, a few things but again nothing recent, posted a list of creative writing books on my Jacquera Black fb page the other day, I suppose you could talk about my goodreads because that’s up to date, as is my fb but only friends have access to that. My nano page, Jacquera Black, is also up to date, sort of, maybe. I post on fb pages a lot, stargate, doctor who, Labour, bsfa, association of Christian writers, Lancaster uni creative writing programme, others, oh and cat pages. Need to do more, but, oh it’s just too stressful, did I mention I’m tired, would have a nap but my hair is wet.

For those of you who have never heard of it, Goodreads is a place to record all the books you have read, are reading and intend to read. It’s a godsend if you tend to, like me, see a book, think ooo, I’d like to read that and then get it home to find that you’ve just brought your third copy of the same book.

Because Jacki is as addicted to books as I am (she’s read 87 books so far this year and I’ve read 88) she keeps her Goodreads up-to-date religiously. She’s got a lot more friends than I do though. Maybe I ought to balance myself out and get with the people instead of the alternate worlds I tend to hide in. Definitely something I could learn from Jacki.

If you click on the link at the right-hand-side of her Goodreads page then you can see a breakdown of Jacki’s 2018 Year in Books. Must have a look at my own, because this is fascinating! It gives you stuff like the first review she wrote in 2018, the longest book, the shortest book, how many words and books she read that year and, of course, a list of the books complete with covers. I love Goodreads!

I’ve just spotted something very interesting: one of the books that Jacki is reading is called The Story Grid: What Good Editors Know by Shawn Coyne. Just read the description and this book is right up my street. It’s basically a guide to how to structure your novel. I’ve just written a novel that now needs editing and so … there, I’ve popped this book on my to-buy list. Thanks Jackie.

I notice that Jacki has posted a Creative Writing Resource List on her Facebook page and I couldn’t find it on her Goodreads page so I took the liberty of creating the list. You can have a look at it here on Goodreads. I’ve read ten out of the twenty-one myself and can vouch for them, so I’m going to have a look at the other eleven volumes too.

And that’s it really. It’s nice to read another devourer of books, so thanks for reading my blog, Jacki.

    • You win! 🙂
I’m actually trying to slow down how fast I’m reading by working my way through books like 1,001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die (and actually listening to every song as well as reading about them) because I’m five books ahead of my schedule.
