The Rules of Attraction

Of course I know that you’re looking down my top! What do you think I am – stupid?

When I tried it on in the changing room at Gap, the first thing I did was bend forward into the mirror, to check that my boobs were showing to full effect. And I did the same when I put it on this morning.

I mean, obviously, I had no way of knowing that I would see you today. But when your pale blue eyes locked onto mine when I came to clear the next table, my heart just knew why I wore it.

There are four sides to a table, so simple maths will tell you that my choice of the side opposite you meant that I’d calculated the optimum angle to give you the best view.

I went to college you know!

But still – I don’t know why. I don’t understand the rules of attraction. I don’t know the reason your eyes (on me) make me feel so … real. I don’t know why I want to be wanton. For you.

Yet my eyes crave you. They love the attention you give. They seek you out. Catch your gaze. Almost smile. Want to hold onto this pseudo-love for a little longer.

Am I normal? What a question!

Yes, there are women who say that they abhor the raping gaze of a man on the prowl. They shout and complain at the slightest sign of appreciation – a smile, a whistle or, heaven forbid – a catcall. They want to tame the animal. They are not me.

Because it’s not that I need you. One husband’s enough for me. I know he’s at home. On the sofa again. Safe in front of the TV as usual. Solid and real as he’s always been.

But what I wouldn’t give, for him to look at me … the way you do.

  1. I’m sorry, but I’m not sure about this. I’m not convinced that you’ve grasped the female mind well enough for me to believe in it.
“Yes, there are women who say that they abhor the raping gaze of a man on the prowl. They shout and complain at the slightest sign of appreciation – a smile, a whistle or, heaven forbid – a catcall. They want to tame the animal. They are not me.” I find this particular paragraph slightly offensive, mostly because of your use of the word “raping”. Not something I can read easily. I feel it is some men’s perception of how they think a women SHOULD feel about men’s attention. Personally, I can’t stand the man who is offended by the woman who is not flattered by unwanted attention (heaven forbid).

Sorry Robert for the negativity. It’s not in my nature to be confrontational, but it’s something I feel strongly about and unfortunately it has clouded my opinion of whether it’s well written or not. I honestly hope your other followers support you in this, but I cannot.

    • At last, I’ve succeeded in saying something controversial!
For you to react to this fiction as if you’ve been (mildly) punched in the gut means to me that I’m finally getting the knack – thanks so much for that.
Yes, I (as a person) agree with you on all points. It’s not an easy thing to write myself into (a) a female head and (b) with views that I don’t fully embrace.
I know for a fact that there are women out there who think like this, because I have met them, but at the same time I know that others will be offended by it. Again – I know you and many others.
I really appreciate you expressing yourself in a way you see as being negative and confrontational. For me, you are expressing the beauty of your heart. Thanks.
      Kindness – Robert.

      • It wasn’t a feeling of being (mildly) punched in the gut, it made me angry…but I think that might be the point you’re missing. But, I’m sure there ARE women who feel the way you’ve described. 50 Shades is testement to that. For the record, I’m not a fan of that.
