A Herd of Elephants Coming Downstairs

My mom used today that me and my sister sounded like a herd of elephants coming downstairs. This was usually when there was food involved. Not that we were fat. Well, certainly not as fat as the animals she was alluding to.

Anyway, I got to thinking today while I was brushing my teeth.

How many elephants are there in a herd?

African elephants are highly social creatures that live in herds led by older, single female matriarchs. In the savanna, family units consist of about 10 individuals. Sometimes families join together and form a clan of up to 70 members. Male elephants, or bulls, typically live alone.

How big would upstairs have to be to get a herd of elephants up there?

When looking at wild elephants the size of their home range is staggering. The home range for wild African elephants can extend up to 11,000 square kilometers, more than 2.7 million acres, female Asian elephants, up to 400 square kilometers and almost double that for a male, up to 200,000 acres.

Can elephants climb down a flight of stairs?

No, they are too top heavy and if they tried to walk downstairs they would fall forward on their face.

What does a herd of elephants falling downstairs sound like?

Quite similar to two small children coming down to dinner, apparently.

And then I spat the toothpaste into the sink and rinsed my mouth.
